Here are a couple exerpts from the article:
"Midwesterners have been summering on the peninsula ~ a 30-mile-long finger of land north of Traverse City that juts into the shimmering blue of Lake Michigan ~ for more than 100 years, and for good reason. The white sand beaches feel as sweeping and sublime as oceanfront. The chain stores are few and far between. And every road seems to meander past a farm, farmer's market, or an unattended "honor farm stand" selling local cherries, berries, apples or tomatoes. Accommodations include a few charming inns and lodges, but it's the area's many rental cottages that are the most desirable, allowing cooks to take full advantage of Leelanau's rich agricultural bounties."
"Still, not everyone is looking for change. In the town of Leland, on the peninsula's west coast, lies the historic fishing village of Fishtown, which has restored wooden shanties and smokehouses dating to the early 1900s. Nels Carlson is the fifth-generation owner of Carlson's Fishery here; with his childhood friend Joe Campo, he took over the shop last summer. "I want to keep the tradition simple," says Carlson, whose family has been on the peninsula since 1904. "It's why people come back."
