Visit Leelanau Books on Saturday, September 27th from 12-3 PM when author John Mitchell will be autographing his State History Award winning book Wood Boats of Leelanau.

The cultural landscape of Leelanau began to change in the 1850s when people of European descent traveled to the western Great Lakes in ever-increasing numbers. At the same time, the era of modern photography dawned as technological advances in imaging allowed photographers to practice their craft outside the confines of their studios. During the century that followed, a progression of remarkable wood boats played a key role in transforming the region. Through histories and photographs, Wood Boats of Leelanau captures the beauty and utility of these vessels and the spirit of the people of the peninsula during one hundred years of unprecedented change.
